Our Health And Being Busy Like the Bees

What can we learn from nature - Alcohol and Anxiety Explored.
1

Our daily lives are very busy. Just like the bees.

We keep going, working, shopping, cooking, cleaning. The bees keep collecting pollen to store later for honey to survive the winter. We collect money to survive.

The pressures of daily life can create stress and anxiety in our lives. Performance is needed at work, at home, and in society at large.

A suggestion was raised in our chat to discuss anxiety, as it affects many people and often people with addiction issues especially alcohol use their substance to self medicate. One of our readers shared “Since getting sober, I’ve learned to control my anxiety which removed my need to self-medicate.”

The Nurse’s view:

I have seen many people in my career as a nurse self-medicating to cover up problems in their lives. Alcohol is easy to get, it is highly accepted and encouraged in our society and many people do not recognize it is a problem and use alcohol to cover up some major issues and problems in their lives. I am not talking about the occasional celebratory use of alcohol. I am addressing everyday use and many times hidden use of alcohol to survive the day.

Alcohol numbs the Central Nervous System and creates a false sensation of relaxation. In the beginning, the coping might be one glass that can quickly escalate. It can easily creep up to higher consumption than the person intended.

When one recognizes that their daily lives are affected by alcohol consumption and they can not do the activities that they normally would do because of it seeking help is essential.

Providers can help with medications and therapy to control both the cravings for alcohol and to teach coping strategies that help with the underlying anxiety that caused the problem in the first place. Setting boundaries is essential for healing. Saying no to others and focusing on one’s health is essential for well-being.

Relaxation techniques to control emotions, and calm the mind like breathing techniques, meditation, Yoga, and walking are some of the simple modalities that can be used to control emotions. Combined with therapies to gain additional tools and medications one can succeed and overcome alcohol use and anxiety in their lives.
